Joint Base Lewis-McChord Bridge

This successful, fast-tracked design-build project involved the emergency repair of a runway/bridge. The Department of Defense declared a National Emergency when air operations were impacted after the failure of the culvert passing under the McChord runway. WM. Winkler CO. supplied the custom precast concrete foundations to Tunista Construction and Brice Civil Constructors. The Team was fully committed to restoring airfield operation ahead of schedule. Despite some unique challenges such as the ground water being contaminated with PFAS/PFOA, COVID-19 impacts to the workforce and supply chain, terrible weather, and airfield paving/striping in the Pacific Northwest winter, the Brice Civil-Tunista Construction Team returned the repaired runway to the Air Force for full operation 25 days ahead of schedule. WM. Winkler CO. received a HUB build northwest award for excellence in construction for this project in 2020.
